Vaccine Made from Complex of Two Malaria Proteins Protects Mice from Lethal Infection NIAID scientists have modified an experimental malaria vaccine that they originally developed more than a decade ago. The new vaccine features parts of two key malaria parasite proteins, AMA1 and RON2, which are delivered as a complex. In nature, malaria parasites use the AMA1-RON2 complex to invade red blood cells. The complex vaccine protected mice from a lethal form of malaria and a similar approach could be used in next-generation human vaccines.
